You see, my friend and gourd farmer of 10+ years has retired. What started as a quick friendship over 10 years ago, and a mutual interest in gardening has now come to end. John was a farmer who managed several 100's of acres in central Ohio. His plantings ranged from straw, hay, corn, and soybeans to Indian corn, small ornamental gourds and pumpkins.

Then 9 years ago, I introduced him to the world of gourds. I purchased a handful of true seeds from the State's Gourd Show and John planted about an acre or so to see what would happen. they produced the best sizes and shapes of gourds. Just in time for fall harvest, he was able to take most of them and sell at the local fairs and farmer's markets.
I got the first pick of the crop to make into my art. Every year they seemed to get bigger and better. We added in more variety as the time went.

Even though I traveled to several out of state gourds shows and visited a few different gourd growers through-out the US, John's gourds were still always the best. I looked forward to climbing into the corn cribs where he put them to dry out over the winter, (mice and all) and discover what treasures laid beneath the mold and dirt. At the end he was producing, martins, cannonballs, canteen, bushels, apples, penguin, swan and spinner gourds. He and his family cleaned and scrubbed them and folks from all around would come and purchase them for their fall decorating.

As like many of us, John and his wife were looking forward to retiring and enjoying their lives without the back-breaking physical work that comes with farming. There was no planting in the spring of 2014, which meant no dried gourds for the harvest in 2015. Other than my meager, dwindling stock pile, John's gourds are no more.

I have been able to create a few pieces with what I have available to me, but have been searching far and wide to finding those that are comparable and affordable. Gone are the beautiful large round ones that I favor so much in my designs. I have to replace my designs with ones that are so much smaller, but still quite nice and they come all the way from Arizona.

So this year, I have had to substitute by gourding with a different kind of crafting and have taken the year off to paint, re-furbish, re-purpose and re-claim furniture and findings. Please take the time to enjoy the new offerings I have gathered this year.
Ho Ho Ho

As much as I don't want to admit it, Christmas is fast approaching. So I have decided to jump on the holiday express and am up to my eyeballs in glitter, snowman, vintage fabrics, paints and of course, gourds!

Just a few Christmas shows on the calendar, and time is tickin' away. I love this time of the year, and I get all caught up in the excitement. I am furiously working on a batch of snow folk for a Nov. 22 show. I have my eyes on pile of gourds just waiting to be transformed into nativities, and then there are elves and Santa's and oh, so much more. I needed this for the fall; drive, energy and ambition, but alas it has come and gone.

I have neglected my postings and promise to make use of this more in the future. I will be posting new creations as they are completed.

Thanks for stopping by, Wishing you all the Merriest of Seasons!

I am sorry to have neglected you for so long. Life has been very busy and problematic this year.
As we are heading back int othe holiday season, I have many new designs to share with you. My first big show of the season is over and as always was a huge success, and I want to thank each and everyone of you who made purchases and additions to your collections.Carolynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10352286304577584066noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3275968049474788089.post-62586412513723509622012-04-26T15:19:00.000-04:002012-04-26T15:19:20.426-04:00Spring CleaningNormally I spend the first three months of the year sketching and coming up with ideas for my new fall line. A while back I started to keep a journal near the bed since a lot of my ideas honestly happen at night. I haven’t been successful in turning off the mind when it is time to hit the hay. Since I turned 40 I finally am embracing this time of the night when a collage of images and ideas fill my head. I love to create with many different mediums and I usually have a hard time staying on track when the mind begins a journey and forks off into hundreds of new ideas. Though I have zoned in on producing Halloween gourd art over the several years, I still love to create jewelry, paint, and sculpt. In addition since I was a small girl dolls were the center of my attention. Being one of four daughters, our home was always filled with baby dolls and Barbies. I had a fabulous aunt who would make us the very best doll clothes complete with tiny zippers, buttons and bows which the fabrics often matched a special dress sewn by my Mom.

I think most women have had a very special doll in their past and the childhood memories which tug at our hearts. I have created several art dolls in the past and always hope to create a few each year. I have to admit that I tend to get carried away and attached to these whimsical characters. They are hard to let go, but if I didn’t I’d have even less space to create in.
My work space is not your typical studio. Having a very small home and five large people living within its walls, I have banished my self to the basement next to the laundry. The lighting is horrid, it’s cold and damp, but if I make a mess I am the only one who has to look at it. I have stacks of materials, magazines, papers, tubs and gourds that desperately needs to be gone through, sorted, organized and yes, some pitched. So, now it’s time I have decided to organize my workspace and put everything in its place.

I know it sounds a little crazy, but I seem to create better when things are in a state of cluttered chaos! Honestly, I should be able to work in a clean and neat space but I really like having everything out to see so that I feel I can just pick up something instead of having to look in a drawer or container for the materials or anything else I might need. I let very few people into my workspace. So this is a big step letting you all in for a peek. My husband and son’s missing tools usually wind up in my space. I know exactly where they are and I do put them away when I am finished…usually after 3-4 months. I have always been a messy person, just ask my Mom. Once things are cleaned, organized and all in their proper places after the 2nd day straight that I can't think of a thing to paint. I need to mess it up a little.

My table is a laminated counter top sitting upon some restaurant racking that was rescued from a former employer over ten years ago. I have a matching counter across the room for my sewing machine which is currently buried by anything not sewing related! I had a drafting table which now resides in a corner which collects an assortment of junk that everyone is too lazy to put away correctly. I have a 10 foot, 4-shelf restaurant rack to line the one wall full of tubs with an assortment of paints, makers, papers, fabrics, gourds, lights, trims, holiday items, well you name it. A four drawer file cabinet that I attempt to store my sketches in, but also houses old photos and jewelry and scrapbooking materials. I have my old pencil sharpener that I received upon high graduation as I headed to art school. I have an odd assortment of colored pencils and markers, and hundreds of paint brushes in on old brass bowl my uncle brought back from the Mid East in the 70’s. Most of these need to be thrown out, but I just hate to part with them. Another old brass container contains my scissors, clay tools and assorted pliers and whatnot. Glitters, and glues, ribbons and wire, bells, and wood bases consume my work space. Not to mention a collection of dried gourds waiting for inspiration to take hold and transform them from grubby to fabulous.

On the top of my file cabinet, I have photos of my three kids and a couple of my butterfly sculptures I couldn’t part with. I gave up on trying to contain my paints in an organized manner and they have since been pitched into a large tub, that I will sort through and pull out as needed. I prefer the Winsor Newton Galleria Acrylics of which litter a shelf that is close at hand. I also have a couple of pieces of pottery that my sons created and painted for me a few years ago and I love that I have something they created for the to see when I am working. When they were younger they loved to work with me and now my nieces love to come and “play”.

Behind my work space I have a drying table and an antique table to place my finished pieces on until the time comes that I can tag, wrap and box them up for an upcoming show. A new addition is a old CD/radio player that once belonged to my youngest son, because he felt I needed some music to inspire me as I work. I prefer to listen to Glee over and over again! I think my next purchase will have to be a clock, because I really do get lost in time when I am working. I hope you have enjoyed your little peek into my creative space, and look forward to postings of my new creations.Carolynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10352286304577584066noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3275968049474788089.post-52343077642073353792011-11-08T09:12:00.000-05:002011-11-08T09:12:12.582-05:00Interview with WHOHUB....
What is your specialty?

I have been a successful craft designer for over 25 years specializing in whimsical Holiday gift ware. I encompass several forms of media in my work from sculpted to painting. About 5 years ago I dabbled in gourd art and that is where I have found creative freedom. Since I have been producing massive amounts of gourd specialities for local and national shows.

Where can we view your portfolio online?

I have a web blog where I post my work on a regular basis and I am also on Facebook, Halloweenartists.com and Gourdenthusiastist.com. I also use this to allow my clients to view upcoming designs and place custom orders if they are interested. since most of my designs are one-of-a-kind they cycle through pretty fast.

What made you interested in design?

I have always been artist. From an early age, I was introduced to art and design through my parents and grandparents. Creativity flows throw my genes. I have been blessed with a unique perspective of the world I live in and am glad to share that with everyone.

What has been your professional career path?

Upon graduation from the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, I began my career in the fashion industry as a fashion illustrator. When things began to go bust in the 80's, I was fortunate to land a position as an art director for a small printing and advertising firm. From there things have evolved in the printing sector, however, I continued to design and paint for my own personal enjoyment.

Have you received any awards for your work in the field of design?

I have received newspaper design awards for the creation of newsletters and tabloids. In addition to taking 2nd place honors at the Ohio State Fair.

What is your motivation? What makes you get up in the mornings?

Life in general. After loosing a parent and friends at an early age, it makes one appreciate every day we spend together.

How would you define your design style?

My design style is folksy, whimsical. My paintings had been compared to Grandma Moses and of late to her grandson, Will Moses which is quite the compliment. Often too patrons have said I have a Tim Burton style to my Halloween creations. I think it is all the twisting gourd vines I incorporate in my pieces.

How do you promote and move your work?

I currently participate in local art shows, my blog, e-bay, the Internet artist circles and in galleries.

In which new areas would you like to experiment?

I LOVE all forms of art. I am often questioned about the many techniques and products I offer. I would love to learn glass blowing, and more on art dolls. But I currently have more than enough on my plate along with a full time job.

Shapes, color, concept: where do you usually begin when conceiving a design?

My favorite designing is for Halloween. I do a lot with gourds and the gourd determines the design. Several factors come into play, I usually don't have a preset idea when I sit down at my drawing table. On occasion I will sketch ideas that pop into my head. I never quite sure where they come from other than childhood memories and everyday inspirations.

What are your sources for documentation and to generate ideas?

Nature, the Internet, vintage postcards and mainly life experiences.

Which festivals or awards in your field do you find most interesting?

Festivals. Art and Craft festival lending more towards the arts. I love the interaction with people who admire my work. I have developed quite a following in the few shows that I do attend.

What is your favorite type of customer?

Animated. I love meeting new people and hearing their take on some of my designs. they usually don;t hold back and tell me, "hey, have you ever tried ..." If I find their suggestion interesting enough, I will do the research and you most likely will see something similar the next season.

To a certain point, is copying justifiable?

Copying, no. Taking inspiration from an others artwork, yes. There are a lot of talented people in our world and there is entire set of folks who will pay for a pattern to reproduce your designs. Then copying is ok, but I'd rather see original artwork. I hate to attend shows to see the same products at half a dozen different booths.

List some things you dislike seeing in design.

Poorly produced and lack of professionalism. I never did understand paint thrown at a canvas and declared artwork. If ones has to explain it, to me it is not worth it.
Do you believe the newer generations are better at designing?

No. With the use of computers and new technology, many are simply regurgitating up old ideas - true talent seems to be missing. Like everything else, designs run in trends, and trends will repeat themselves. True talent takes more than operating a computer or digital camera. Creativity is part of your inner core, a sixth sense and an eye for composition.
With which type of client would you decline in working for?

Have you ever fallen into the trap of producing something based upon the subject matter to get a sale, when the subject matter trumps your values? I learned that lesson the hard way, and the project just never seemed quite right for me. It left me exhausted and disappointed regardless of the fact that the client loved it. I find myself being stifled when I have to create something to exact specifications. I need that creative licence to make something truly exordinary and be happy with it. Which is exactly how I view my Halloween art. Let me create and then you can purchase. Instead of cookie cutter structurered design; be prepared to be treated, Halloween comes just once a year!

How do you calculate budgets for a design project?

Budgets or the pricing of my work is simple. Materials x 4. It is usually based upon something I have already produced. Some of my designs take a lot longer than others. When I produce for a season I am producing multiples (usually 12 at a time) of one design. I could never recap the cost of time involved on some designs, therefore I charge a little more on some and a little less on others. It has worked out fine for me in the past. If I really like the way it turns out, I may add up to 10% more because I know it will be a valued item. My enjoyment out of creating to me is priceless.

Which professionals in your field -contemporary or past- do you most admire?

There are several that I admire. Flora Thompson from Bone Head Studios, Scott Smith from Rucus Studios, Bethany Lowe, Johanna Parker to name a few.

Which software applications do you most utilize in your work?

Don't laugh...Word. I can do some amazing things with this software...and photoshop elements.

Up to what point do your designs reflect your personality?

I'd like to think that each of my designs reflect my personality. Lots of fun, love and laughter, and little bit kookier. I give them all names and they evolve into that character. It is like having a baby and watching it grow as it takes shape.

How do you distinguish passing fads from mainstays in new trends?

A totally miserable week-end of below normal temps and drizzly rain kept folks from coming out in droves. Thankfully, I was housed inside the coliseum for exhibition. Regardless of the crappy weather outside there was an abundance of fun and good cheer inside with demonstrations, creative classes and camaraderie.

Competitions were stiff and the quality of items on display were amazing. I thought I'd share some of the outstanding pieces on exhibit. And to encourage you to come out and check us out next year...same place...same week-end. (Last week-end in September) See you there!
The crowds came but overall sales were down a considerable amount. I offered newly designed, carved bowls for everyday use in addition to my good old standbys...Halloween, but Halloween is what the people wanted - so next year it is what they will get! Months of cleaning, designing, sculpting, carving, and painting led to some pretty disappointing results, but I sure had fun anyways!

It is always good to see old friends and to make new ones. Now that I can be found on facebook, I had the opportunity to meet and greet some of my new followers. I was amazed to learn how many pieces individual collectors have of my work...the winner went to a gal who owns 16 of my gourds! And, she bought more! Let's see who can top that one!

In all seriousness, I greatly appreciate all the kind words, encouragement, compliments and patronage. Without you, all this hard work wouldn't be worth it. THANK YOU!
